The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerian youths to take a leading role in combating corruption.
Olukoyede made the appeal on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Sokoto State to mark the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day.
Speaking through the Zonal Director of the EFCC, Nnwanneka Nwokike, Olukoyede emphasized the disproportionate impact of corruption on young people.
“Corruption affects everyone, but its effects are particularly devastating for youths,” he said. “It limits opportunities for self-actualization and tilts the playing field in favor of nepotism, favoritism, and other unfair practices.”
He warned that corruption not only denies young people equal opportunities but also exposes them to fraudulent practices, often luring them into criminal activities.
“Young people need a united front to challenge corruption and protect their future. No other generation will do it for them,” he added.
Olukoyede outlined actionable steps for youths to contribute to the fight against corruption, including forming synergies against graft, supporting anti-corruption agencies, exposing unethical practices, and committing to integrity.
He assured whistleblowers of protection and announced the availability of a complaints box at the zonal office for public petitions.
Also speaking at the event, Comrade Bello Shehu, Chairman of the Civil Society Organization in Sokoto State, praised the EFCC for its collaboration with local organizations.
“The establishment of the EFCC Zonal Office in Sokoto has significantly helped sanitize various sectors in the state,” Shehu said.
He called on the commission to organize orientations for civil society groups, especially in light of the recent autonomy granted to local governments in the state.
The event was attended by representatives of Integrity Club from Shehu Shagari College of Education, Zero Tolerance Club from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, corps members, and other stakeholders.
“Youths must join hands to build a society free from corruption, as their involvement is key to progressive change,” Nwokike urged.
