Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has addressed the increasing speculation surrounding Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo’s potential switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria.
Adarabioyo, 27, born in England to Nigerian parents, is eligible to represent both the Three Lions and the Super Eagles, having previously showcased his talent at various youth levels for England.
Having developed his skills at Manchester City, Adarabioyo had a remarkable season with Fulham before transferring to Chelsea this summer.
Despite his impressive performances, he has yet to receive a senior call-up for the England national team, particularly missing out on selection for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024.
This lack of recognition has reportedly prompted the defender to reconsider his international options, making him more open to the prospect of representing Nigeria.
In a recent interview, Eguavoen confirmed that the Nigerian Football Federation is actively monitoring Adarabioyo’s situation.
While he has not yet had direct communication with the Chelsea star, Eguavoen praised the player’s capabilities and emphasized that any Nigerian eligible to play internationally has the opportunity to don the national colors.
“I didn’t speak with Tosin, but he’s a good player,” Eguavoen stated to reporters. “He’s one of the players we’re monitoring. Every Nigerian playing worldwide has the right to play for Nigeria, including Tosin.”
Should Adarabioyo decide to represent Nigeria, he could create a formidable defensive partnership with established Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong.
This addition would significantly enhance Nigeria’s defensive options as they gear up for crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, including a double-header against Libya scheduled for the next two weeks.
Securing a player of Adarabioyo’s quality would undoubtedly provide a substantial boost to the Super Eagles’ squad.
As speculation continues regarding Adarabioyo’s potential switch, Eguavoen remains focused on preparing the team for their upcoming matches, keenly aware of the importance of solidifying the squad for the challenges ahead.
