Augustine Eguavoen has once again stepped up to the challenge, expressing his readiness to assume the role of interim head coach for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Eguavoen, currently serving as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation, has been tasked with leading the national team in their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
This decision by the NFF follows the refusal of Bruno Labbadia, a German coach with a reputable track record, to accept the job offer to manage the Super Eagles.
With Labbadia’s rejection, the NFF turned to Eguavoen, marking the fourth occasion the former international defender will guide the national team from the sidelines.
Eguavoen, known for his deep connection to Nigerian football, expressed his commitment to the role, highlighting his unwavering love for both the nation and the sport.
“I will do it for the love of the country and the game,” Eguavoen told Mastersports. “Remember, football gave me name and fame and the country gave me opportunity so it’s difficult to say no at this point because of the circumstances we find ourselves.”
The Super Eagles are set to face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium next Saturday, in what promises to be a pivotal encounter.
Following that, they will travel to Kigali to take on the Amavubi of Rwanda on Tuesday, September 10, at the newly refurbished Amahoro Stadium.
The outcome of these matches will be critical in determining Nigeria’s path to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
