Some victims of armed robberies on the popular Eko Bridge which is located near the popular Apongbon Market on Lagos Island, Lagos State, are set to embark on a peaceful protest.

A tweep with the username @PureMinD__ who is the convener of the protest (##SecureEkoBridge) alleged that “the police and (Governor Babajide) Sanwo-Olu are to be blamed for the robberies on Eko Bridge.”

He added that “If the police do their job. Eko bridge will be safe regardless of the traffic caused by the closure.”

PunchMetro reports that Eko Bridge is one of three bridges (including the Third Mainland and Carter bridges) connecting Lagos Island to the mainland.

A section of the bridge in the Apongbon area of the state has been closed since the 23rd of March following a massive fire incident, leaving motorists with harrowing driving experiences since the closure.

Although a date has not been fixed as of the time of filing this report, the convener said that the peaceful ‘car protest’ aims to get the attention of Sanwo-Olu to make him aware of the ordeal of commuters who have been victims of robberies on the bridge and force him to take a decision.

“Maybe by then, we will have Mr Governor’s attention since the peaceful protest is the only language he and Lagos police understand,” he added.

The tweep, in a series of tweets to his 29 thousand followers, accused the Lagos State Police Command of “negligence to the incessant robberies that have rocked the Ejo Bridge since it was closed on the 23rd of March,”  adding that the police operatives deployed overlook the robberies to “run after cars plying BRT lane.”

Reacting, one follower said that he “totally agree with him[@PureMinD__] on the escalating cases of robbery incidents on that bridge… in fact along most bridges in Lagos.”

If you ply Eko Bridge daily between 6.00am and 6.30am and you will be interested in a “Car Protest” to show @followlasg & @jidesanwoolu that we are tired of being robbed of our valuables, getting injured and having car windows smashed by robbers.
