The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria has announced its plan to join the Sydney and Dublin Accords to enhance global recognition of Nigeria’s engineering profession.
This strategic move aims to align Nigeria with international standards in engineering education and qualifications, promoting global mobility for Nigerian engineers.
According to The PUNCH, the COREN President Prof. Sadiq Abubakar revealed the council’s commitment to commencing accreditation of Technical Colleges in Nigeria in the upcoming academic session.
“In line with the aspiration of COREN to meet the global standards of the Sydney Accord and Dublin Accord under the International Engineering Alliance, we have agreed to commence accreditation of Technical Colleges in Nigeria this coming academic session,” Abubakar stated.
The Sydney Accord and Dublin Accord are international agreements that establish standards for engineering education, focusing on engineering technology and technician-level programmes, respectively.
Membership in these accords allows engineers to work in participating countries without needing to requalify, thereby enhancing the global recognition and portability of Nigerian engineering qualifications.
Abubakar highlighted that this initiative mirrors Nigeria’s historic admission into the Washington Accord in 2023 and is expected to significantly boost the country’s engineering profession.
He also announced that the upcoming 32nd Engineering Assembly, scheduled for August 5-7, will feature the presentation of the design and model for the new COREN headquarters in Jahi, Abuja.
The council has acquired a 6,578 square meter plot in Jahi, Abuja, for the construction of its permanent headquarters.
The final day of the Assembly, termed the ‘Engineering Family Forum,’ will include a workshop to guide Nigeria’s preparation and application for admission into the Sydney and Dublin Accords for engineering technologists, technicians, craftsmen, and artisans.
Emphasizing COREN’s dedication to enhancing the regulation of engineering education and practices, Abubakar called on the Federal Government to continue supporting COREN financially, akin to funding provided to the health sector, to ensure the benefits reach the citizenry and
