English defender Laura James has apologized to Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie for stamping her with her foot during the round of 16 game between Nigeria and England.
Punch Metro reported that James saw red after she stood on Alozie rather than step over her after a challenge between the pair left both on the floor.
While the Three Lions went on to win the game on penalties, the referee, Melissa Borjas, issued James a Red Card after initially issuing her a yellow card.
On Tuesday morning, Alozie tweeted to James to let him know there were no animosities between them, saying: ‘This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James’
In response, James tweeted, “All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened.”
The Lionesses will now face Colombia in the quarterfinals on Saturday, but James will be suspended for that match and potentially the rest of the tournament for aggressive behaviour, which carries a three-match penalty.
