Nottingham Forest handed Manchester United a second straight Premier League defeat, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United, managed by Ruben Amorim, fought back after Nikola Milenković’s early opener, with Rasmus Højlund restoring parity.
However, goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood swung the game in Forest’s favour, and despite Bruno Fernandes narrowing the deficit, the visitors held on for their first win at Old Trafford since 1994.
The result propels Forest to fifth in the league, while United find themselves struggling in 13th.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last month, began his tenure on a promising note with two wins and a draw in his first three matches.
However, his earlier caution that the “storm will come” seems prophetic as United’s poor season continues to unravel.
After suffering a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal earlier in the week, United’s woes were compounded by another frustrating outing at home.
“A tough game in a tough moment, but we have to continue the job,” Amorim told the BBC after the game. “This is a long journey. We are improving in some aspects. We have to win games to help us improve the team. We are at the start of something so big that we pay attention to every detail. We already know it’s a big job, so we have to continue.”
United’s defensive frailties, particularly at set-pieces, were evident once again. Milenković opened the scoring just two minutes in, heading home an Elliot Anderson corner after outmuscling Lisandro Martínez.
The hosts rallied, with Højlund pouncing on a rebound in the 18th minute after Alejandro Garnacho’s shot was parried by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Forest, however, were undeterred. Jota Silva’s header rattled the crossbar, while Fernandes came close to giving United the lead, only for Sels to brilliantly tip his 25-yard free-kick onto the bar.
Forest regained control early in the second half. Callum Hudson-Odoi dispossessed Fernandes and teed up Gibbs-White, whose stunning 20-yard strike swerved past Andre Onana.
Wood then extended Forest’s lead in the 54th minute, meeting a Gibbs-White cross with a looping header that sailed over Onana, Matthijs de Ligt, and Martínez.
United responded just after the hour mark when Amad Diallo set up Fernandes, who struck cleanly from the edge of the area. Despite the late pressure and chances for Marcus Rashford and Martínez in stoppage time, Forest’s defense held firm to seal a memorable win.
