Manchester United’s head coach, Erik ten Hag, reflected positively on his tenure at the club, noting that only Pep Guardiola has achieved greater trophy success during this period.
Joining the Red Devils in the summer of 2022, ten Hag vowed to restore Manchester United to the heights they experienced under Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, his early tenure resembled the struggles faced by previous post-Ferguson managers.
The Dutchman narrowly avoided dismissal last season after leading the team to its worst Premier League finish , 8th. Yet, he redeemed himself by securing an FA Cup victory against Manchester City.
Reflecting on his time at the club, ten Hag expressed satisfaction with his accomplishments, highlighting that only Manchester City (four) have surpassed their trophy count, EFL Cup 2022/23, FA Cup 2023/24.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged the need for further improvement. Despite the cup triumphs, the team’s league performance has been disappointing, with a third-place finish in his first season dropping to eighth in his second year.
“Of course [I feel stronger after winning the FA Cup],” ten Hag told The Times. “This club didn’t win trophies before I came for six years.
“In two years, after Guardiola, we won the most trophies in English football. So we are in a strong position. Look, we can beat every opponent. Not one time, more than one time against City and also against Liverpool.
“But the truth is that there is a long way to go, we have to be more consistent and we need to create a winning culture.
“It’s not only a dressing room winning culture; higher standards should be delivered across the whole club.”
Additionally, ten Hag admitted to having less influence over the club’s transfer policy but viewed it as a positive development.
