Austria claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Berlin to clinch the top spot in Group D at UEFA Euro 2024.
Marcel Sabitzer of Borussia Dortmund sealed the win with a goal in the 80th minute.
Austria took the lead after just six minutes, with Donyell Malen inadvertently scoring an own goal off an Alexander Prass cross intended for Marko Arnautovic.
Despite Austria’s early dominance, the Netherlands fought back and Cody Gakpo leveled the score at 1-1 in the 47th minute, thanks to a pass from Xavi Simons.
However, Austria regained the lead in the 59th minute when Florian Grillitsch’s cross found Romano Schmid, who headed in his first international goal.
The Netherlands equalized again in the 75th minute, with Memphis Depay scoring after a VAR check ruled out a handball in the build-up.
Austria secured the win in the 80th minute when Christoph Baumgartner set up Marcel Sabitzer for the winning goal.
The victory ensured Austria finished top of Group D with six points, one ahead of France, who drew 1-1 with Poland.
Austria will face the runners-up of Group F in the next round, while France will take on the runners-up of Group E.
The Netherlands will await their fate after the conclusion of Wednesday’s group-stage matches.
