Belgian side, Union Saint-Gilloise, on Thursday defeated a young Liverpool side in Brussels.
Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp fielded the youngest Liverpool side to ever line-up in Europe, a squad made up of under 23s with a few seniors offering balance in the form of Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo.
In the 2-1 loss to Union Saint-Gilloise, an historic moment emerged with 20-year-old center-back Jarell Quansah scoring his maiden senior goal.
Quansah became the 14th different scorer for Liverpool this season, showcasing his ongoing improvement.
Despite Quansah’s 40th-minute equalizer, marking the club’s record 34th successive goal-scoring match, Klopp’s youthful squad faced a strenuous test throughout the game.
However, the secured top spot for Liverpool, despite their second defeat, highlighted by Union’s victory that propelled them into the Europa Conference League play-offs.
The team’s average age stood at a mere 21.9 years, with Wataru Endo, aged 30, notably five years older than the next senior player.
Among the regular starters, only Ibrahima Konate and Cody Gakpo were part of the squad, while the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, and Alisson Becker were absent but set to return for the upcoming clash against Manchester United.
