In a tragic incident early Monday morning, the secretariat of the Action People’s Party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was hit by a dynamite explosion.
According to The PUNCH, the blast, which occurred at approximately 1 am, caused significant damage to the building located along the GRA axis of the state capital.
Witnesses reported that the attackers threw what appeared to be dynamite into the APP secretariat, leading to a violent explosion that shattered windows and doors.
The force of the blast also inflicted substantial damage on the building’s interior, destroying ceiling fittings and other party property.
The explosion comes amid growing political tensions in Rivers State.
There have been ongoing rumors suggesting that State Governor Siminalayi Fubara may be considering a shift to the APP along with his supporters.
This potential move is reportedly fueled by allegations that his predecessor and former political mentor, Nyesom Wike, has taken control of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
Newsmen who visited the scene shortly after the incident, observed that the damage was extensive.
Party officials were seen at the site, discussing the incident and its implications.
An unnamed APP official claimed that the attack was clearly politically motivated.
“Yes, I’m a member of the APP. I was informed of the attack at about 3 am today. This is politically-motivated and there is no two ways about it. They know that the APP is a fast-growing political party in the state. We call on the police to investigate this and arrest the culprits,” the official stated.
The explosion has left the APP community in shock, with many members concerned about the implications for their party’s safety and future activities.
The destruction of the party’s property marks a troubling development in the already tense political climate of Rivers State.
In response to the attack, when contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, indicated that she was not immediately aware of the incident but promised to investigate further.
She assured that an update would be provided once more information becomes available.
As investigations into the incident unfold, the APP is calling for urgent action from the authorities to address the violence and hold those responsible accountable. The attack on their secretariat underscores the increasing volatility in the state’s political arena and raises serious concerns about security and political stability in the region.
