A 25-year-old man, Bukola Olabode, who allegedly impersonated a police officer to perpetrate fraud, has been apprehended in Ogun State.
Olabode, notorious for using fake bank transfers to defraud Point of Sale operators and residents in the Ipokia Local Government Area, was arrested after his latest attempt to swindle a POS operator identified as Mary Midoyin.
The suspect, clad in police camouflage attire, was exposed when he attempted to make a fraudulent transfer of N60,000 to Midoyin.
Realizing his deceit had been uncovered, he fled the scene, but vigilant residents apprehended him and handed him over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. He was later transferred to the Idiroko Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
Providing details of the arrest, the Ogun State police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident on Friday.
“The suspect was dressed in a police camouflage shirt, cap, and jeans when he committed the crime. Upon realising his cover had been blown, he quickly made a fake transfer to Mary Midoyin, a PoS operator, and collected N60,000 before fleeing the scene,” she said.
Odutola disclosed that during interrogation, Olabode admitted to defrauding POS operators within the community on multiple occasions.
Items retrieved from him included a Samsung phone, a black Itel phone, a police constabulary warrant card, and a round-neck T-shirt.
The police spokesperson emphasized that the suspect is currently in detention, and an investigation is underway to uncover the extent of his fraudulent activities.
Odutola assured the public that Olabode would face prosecution once the investigation is concluded.
