The late Sir Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed the Nigerian flag, is set to be buried after spending a year in the mortuary.
This follows the release of funds by the Oyo State Government to fulfill a promise made to his family.
According to the FIJ, Samuel Akinkunmi, one of Sir Michael’s sons, confirmed the receipt of the funds.
In addition to financial support, the state government has committed to providing logistics support throughout the burial period.
“The funds for the burial arrangements were released by the state government last week,” Samuel Akinkunmi stated. “We will announce the exact burial date to the public by Monday next week. We thank God that the long wait is over, and we can now finally bury our father.”
However, the family has yet to receive any support from the federal government, despite a pledge made by the National Orientation Agency in 2023 for a national burial.
“After my dad passed away on August 29, 2023, NOA officials visited us and promised to give him a befitting national burial,” Akinkunmi said. “To date, we have not heard from them, which contributed to the delay. We could have buried him in December 2023.”
It would be recalled that the family had earlier said the Presidency is yet to fulfil its promise of a betting burial for their patriarch.
