The Vehicle Inspection Officers in the Federal Capital Territory have reiterated their commitment to crushing impounded commercial motorcycles, citing it as the most effective solution to tackling the okada menace in the territory.
According to Daily Trust, the Head of Operations, Mrs Deborah Osho, made this known during a routine operation to impound illegally operating commercial motorcycles in the capital city.
She argued that even when motorcycles are being crushed, operators continue to flout the ban, necessitating a stiffer penalty to rid the city of the menace.
The VIO has announced plans to introduce additional punitive measures to address the issue, which will be made public once finalized.
She said, “The fine doesn’t work again. We are looking for a stiffer penalty to make sure we rid the city of the menace of okada operators.”
Aruna Quadri, Assar head African contingent to Saudi Smash.
“There are plans for other punitive measures to address the menace, and we will make it public when concluded.
“As long as okada operators continue to violate the ban on operating within the city, we will continue to pick them up.”
Secretary of the Command and Control Centre, FCTA Department of Security Services, Dr. Peter Olumuji underscored the importance of the impoundment operations, which will continue day and night.
He explained that the exercise is a response to residents’ concerns about the persistent problem of commercial motorcycle operators in the city.
