The Federal Capital Territory Administration has announced a new initiative offering free health insurance and caesarean section services for all pregnant women residing in the FCT.
According to Channels, this was disclosed by the Mandate Secretary for Health, Adedolapo Fasewa, during the 2025 World Health Day celebration held at Gwarimpa District Hospital, Abuja, on Monday.
Fasewa noted that expectant mothers must enroll in the FCT Health Insurance Scheme to access the free caesarean section services. She added that the package also includes postnatal care for newborns.
Highlighting the critical state of maternal health in Nigeria, Fasewa pointed out that the country continues to record the highest maternal mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa.
However, she assured that the current administration is taking decisive steps to reverse the trend and improve survival outcomes for both mothers and infants.
She called on women in the FCT to take advantage of the scheme by registering, emphasizing that reducing maternal deaths is a shared responsibility that goes beyond the Federal Government and requires the support of all stakeholders.
