The Federal Government has achieved significant milestones in its fight against terrorism and crime, with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), announcing the conviction of 13 terrorism financing cases.
According to The PUNCH, Fagbemi disclosed this during a sectoral ministerial press briefing in Abuja, where he presented the scorecard of the Federal Ministry of Justice over the past year.
He also revealed that the Ministry successfully concluded 150 Mutual Legal Assistance requests and secured 12 extradition requests from law enforcement agencies and foreign countries.
The AGF highlighted that the Ministry secured 160 convictions for criminal offences, 87 convictions for terrorism cases, and three novel convictions for extremist terrorism actors involved in the radicalization of children and violence against women.
He emphasized that this is in line with the Ministry’s mandate of enhancing national security and safety through prosecution.
Speaking further, Fagbemi said the Ministry “secured 160 convictions for criminal offences, 87 convictions for terrorism cases, three novel convictions for extremist terrorism actors involved in the radicalisation of children and violence against women.”
The AGF explained that this is in line with the ministry’s mandate of enhancing national security and safety through prosecution.
He also said that “there is an enhanced inter-agency synergy for the prosecution of maritime cases, electricity offences, collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders on cybersecurity protection and prosecution.”
Fagbemi revealed that the ministry has resumed trials of terrorism cases in conjunction with the Legal Aid Council, National Human Rights Commission and other stakeholders.
He said, “The percentages of terrorism cases initiated and corruption cases concluded within the reporting period has been significant,” adding that the National Human Rights Commission handled 2,849,203 complaints from the public on various human rights issues.”
Fagbemi also noted an enhanced inter-agency synergy for the prosecution of maritime cases, electricity offences, and collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders on cybersecurity protection and prosecution.
The Ministry has resumed trials of terrorism cases in conjunction with the Legal Aid Council, National Human Rights Commission, and other stakeholders.
The National Human Rights Commission handled 2,849,203 complaints from the public on various human rights issues, while the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons secured 65 convictions comprising 57 perpetrators of human trafficking and eight offenders prosecuted under the Violence Against Persons Act.
