The Federal Government has released funds to settle outstanding salaries owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities and provide retirement benefits for pensioners under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
The Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, confirmed the disbursement in a statement issued on Saturday.
Mokwa explained that the payment processes for NASU members have begun, with several beneficiaries acknowledging receipt of the funds.
“The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of withheld salaries to Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities,” the statement reads.
Additionally, Mokwa clarified that the allocated funds include provisions for retirees’ benefits, stating, “Funds have also been allocated for the payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector.”
The OAGF further indicated that the payment rollout had already started for non-academic staff at federal universities, with many recipients confirming they received the money.
This financial action underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of both active employees and retirees, especially as universities face disruptions due to recent labor actions.
Earlier in the week, the Joint Action Committee of NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities declared an indefinite strike to demand four months of withheld salaries.
This strike has significantly affected operations across Nigeria’s federal universities, bringing them to a virtual halt.
