The Federal Government has declared that this year’s Independence Day celebration, slated for October 1st, will be a subdued affair, differing from the customary elaborate ceremony held at Eagle Square in Abuja.
According to The PUNCH, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, expressed that this year’s Independence Day should serve as a period for reflection and contemplation, encouraging citizens to ponder deeply on their collective journey ahead.
The announcement came after Mr. Akume’s private meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Although he refrained from disclosing the specifics of the discussion, he mentioned that it revolved around the arrangements for the upcoming Independence Day.
The decision for a low-key celebration aligns with the current circumstances and priorities of the nation, fostering a spirit of contemplation and unity among Nigerians.
“Independence is a very historic event for any country and we Nigerians are no exemptions.
“We are fully prepared for celebrations and for obvious reasons, it going to be low-key and we are wishing Nigerians the best of luck and I want to assure them that better days are coming and pretty soon too.
“This is going to be low key; we are not going on fantastic jamboree at the Eagle Square and other locations,” the SGF said.
