The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission, has initiated plans to introduce 12 new academic programmes into Nigerian universities.
According to The PUNCH, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, confirmed this during a meeting with members of review panels assigned to refine the proposed courses.
Ribadu said the initiative follows multiple requests from universities and professional bodies seeking curriculum expansion.
“The landscape of education and knowledge is evolving rapidly. Our curriculum must not only impart knowledge but also foster critical thinking, adaptability, and innovation,” Ribadu stated.
The new programmes to be introduced include Artificial Intelligence, Classical Christian Education, Community Health Science, Cooperative Economics and Management Studies, Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science, Geomatics Engineering, Intelligence and Security Studies, Parasitology and Entomology, Sports Management, Telecommunication Science, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, and Islamic Economics and Finance.
Ribadu emphasized that the commission’s mandate, drawn from the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act, empowers it to set minimum standards and accredit degree programmes across Nigerian universities.
He further urged the review panels to ensure the proposed courses meet both national and global standards while incorporating local relevance.
“We expect valuable insights from experienced experts to ensure that these programmes align with best practices while addressing the nation’s unique educational needs,” he added.
The panels have been tasked with strengthening any identified weak areas rather than outrightly dismissing them.
The NUC boss also assured that the commission appreciates the dedication of the panelists and remains committed to upholding quality education standards.
