The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that former Nigeria winger, Finidi George, will be in charge of the Super Eagles of Nigeria when they play Ghana and Mali in an international friendly later this month.
NFF’s media team disclosed this via a statement on social media.
“Coach George Finidi has held a meeting with Super Eagles team officials as he leads the Super Eagles in international friendlies against Ghana and Mali #SoarSuperEagles.” It read.
Finidi was Jose Peseiro’s assistant coach during his time in charge of the national team.
Following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, the coaching position for the Super Eagles became vacant.
Reports had revealed that the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation might step in as an interim boss, along with the former Ajax winger.
Without a coach, Finidi George has been given the responsibility to lead the team in a match that would be their first since they lost the 2023 AFCON finals to Ivory Coast last month
The 52-year-old coach was one of the longest-standing assistants to Peseiro, spending 22 months alongside the Portuguese coach. His familiarity with the team is seen as an advantage ahead of the Ghana and Mali fixtures.
The Super Eagles have already begun preparations for the matches, opening their camp in Marakech, Morocco. Ten players have been confirmed to have arrived at the camp.
Nigeria is set to renew their historic rivalry with Ghana on March 22nd, followed by a match against Mali on March 26th.
