A fire outbreak on Sunday caused significant destruction along Obodoukwu Road near the Relief Market in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Several shops were gutted, with properties worth millions of naira reportedly lost.
The incident, which sparked chaos and panic, saw traders and residents scrambling to save their belongings amidst the growing crowd.
Confirming the development, the Anambra State Fire Chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, disclosed on Monday that the fire service was alerted at 4:19 p.m. on November 24, 2024.
“We immediately dispatched firemen with two trucks from the Okpoko and Main Market fire stations, along with other firefighting equipment, to tackle the fire,” Chiketa said. “They worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control and prevented it from spreading further.”
According to him, the fire affected a few shops but no casualties were recorded. The firefighting operation lasted until 7:39 p.m.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined,” he added. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and adopt fire safety measures.”
While investigations continue, residents and traders have been left counting their losses and appealing for improved emergency response in the area.
