A devastating fire gutted a one-storey building at Obi Onuorah Crescent, behind Okowe Plaza in Asaba, Delta State, leaving a family of six homeless.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, with three children rescued from the inferno.
A widow and mother of four, Mrs. Gloria Sado was distraught as she recounted the ordeal. “I returned home around 9 pm to find our house engulfed in flames.
“My three children were inside, but thankfully, one had accompanied me to the market. It was a Herculean effort to rescue the others.”
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it has left the family with significant losses. “All our property was burnt to ashes, and the three fire services that responded didn’t have water to extinguish the fire,” Mrs. Sado lamented.
A neighbor, Simon Amalimen, who helped rescue the children, also lost his apartment and belongings. “I was in my apartment when I heard the fire alarm. We rushed to rescue the children, but the fire had already spread to my apartment. My wife, two children, and I managed to escape with only the clothes on our backs.”
The victims are currently receiving assistance from sympathizers, who have provided clothing and temporary shelter.
An official from the Delta State Fire Service confirmed the incident, but the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
