2022 Bayelsa State flood victims have alleged that the state administration has been holding back relief supplies that have been given by charitable people and organizations for their use.
The chairman and secretary of the steering committee of the Coalition of Respective Leaderships of Aggrieved 2022 Flood Promoted IDP Camps in the state, Pastor Leighe Nathaniel and Mr. Christian Iwokurai, advised the flood mitigation committee not to permit a repeat of the state’s bitter history of hoarding palliatives.
In a letter to Governor Duoye Diri and the Civil Liberty Organization, the group criticized what they called the uneven distribution of palliatives by the Bayelsa State Emergency Management Committee’s (BYSEMA) noting that the state government only attended to IDPs in the two camps it had established in Igbogene and Oxbow Lake, while other IDP camps in public schools were neglected.
The group said that their goal was to improve the circumstances of other flood-affected households by contributing to the distribution of palliatives.
However, in response to the accusation, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Task Force on Flood Mitigation and Management, Mr. Iselema Gbaranbiri, urged the people of Bayelsa to have patience with the government while the second round of palliative distribution was ongoing.
