The Delta State Government has issued a directive for the prompt demolition of structures situated on waterways throughout the state.
According to The PUNCH, this action is being taken as a preventive measure to avoid a recurrence of the flood disaster witnessed in the state during the previous year.
The announcement was made by the state Director General on Special Duties, Chief Frank Omare, during a recent inspection tour of significant drainages in the twin metropolis of Warri and Uvwie, as well as their surrounding areas. These drainages had been obstructed by buildings and illegal structures.
He said, “Government is constructing drainages and those drainages have been blocked. A lot of buildings are standing on the waterways. Some of them were illegally approved and some of them do not have approval at all.
“My office has been directed to pull down structures blocking the waterways. The demolition will not be selective. No one should do any irresponsible thing against the environment.”
