Nigeria’s men’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, are set to begin the final phase of their preparations for the upcoming WAFU B U-20 Championship at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, in Ogun State, starting from Monday.
The team, under the guidance of head coach Aliyu Zubairu, has been training in Abuja for the past two weeks.
However, in a bid to enhance focus and readiness, they will now shift to the Ikenne base for more intensive sessions.
“The new training base will allow the team maximum concentration,” Zubairu explained in a statement to BSN Sports. He added, “We need maximum concentration, which we don’t have in Abuja and so we will change camp, where we will train at least for eight days before we move to Togo.”
A source within the team confirmed that the camp in Ikenne will last for a week, allowing the players to fine-tune their strategies before their departure for the tournament, which kicks off on October 17.
The Flying Eagles will be competing in Group B, where they are set to face tough opponents, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.
In preparation, the Flying Eagles showcased their readiness by securing a commanding 6-0 victory against Morak FC in a friendly match held at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch in Abuja on Thursday.
This dominant performance highlighted the team’s growing synergy ahead of their international challenge.
The WAFU B U-20 Championship, hosted by Togo, also serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, adding an extra layer of importance to the competition for Zubairu’s team.
