A tragic boat mishap has claimed the lives of at least four individuals in Dundaye community, located within Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident was confirmed by the Head of the Sokoto Field Operation Office of the National Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Aliyu Kafindangi, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto on Tuesday.
Kafindangi explained that the unfortunate event took place on Sunday evening.
A coordinated effort involving NEMA, the Nigerian Red Cross, Fire Services, the State Emergency Management Agency, and local divers led to the recovery of the victims’ bodies on Monday.
“Based on investigation, 24 persons were involved in the incident but 19 of them have been rescued,” Kafindangi stated.
He further detailed that, “One dead body was recovered on Sunday, and yesterday we recovered an additional three, bringing the number of deaths to four. One person is still missing, but search and rescue is still ongoing.”
The NEMA official also expressed gratitude towards the state and local governments, as well as the community members, for their continued support in the rescue operations.
