Four passengers sustained injuries on Thursday morning when a fire broke out on a ferry carrying 19 passengers at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority in a statement, confirmed that the incident occurred around 6:45 am. The affected vessel, identified as “Igbega Eko” and operated by LAGFERRY, was heading to Victoria Island when the fire erupted.
LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit noted that the exact cause of the fire was yet to be determined but assured that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.
“Our emergency response team acted swiftly in collaboration with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation effectively,” the statement read.
It added that while most passengers escaped unharmed, four individuals sustained minor injuries and were receiving medical attention.
The authority emphasized that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire, with efforts being made to prevent future occurrences.
“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways,” LASWA stated.
The agency reassured the public that ferry services remained operational and urged passengers to adhere to safety guidelines.
“LASWA assures the public that all safety protocols remain intact and ferry operations are proceeding as scheduled. We encourage all passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying our waterways,” the statement concluded.
