A 300-level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Olona Oluwapekumu, has allegedly committed suicide at his off-campus lodge around the Aule area of the State capital.
The student union body of the institution confirmed this in a statement signed by the president of the union, Jesunifemi TenTen Asoore, on Saturday.
The statement reads, “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Olona Joseph Oluwapelumi, popularly known as Tart Angle, who passed away on Sat 21st Jan 2023.
“According to the report, His death was confirmed in the early hour of Saturday, 21st January, 2023. The deceased, identified as Olona Joseph, a 300L student from the department of Industrial Design, was reported to have committed suicide by hanging himself in the early hour of today.
“I know we are all saddened by his death, and we’re sending our condolences to his family and friend.
“Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions, which might include shock, sadness, and confusion.
“We want to assure you that we, the Student Union, care about you and the feelings you may be experiencing.”
Aside from the statement from the FUTASU, the school authorities are yet to make an official statement on the incident.
A peep through the deceased’s Facebook page with the brand name “Tart Angle” contained a post on sucidal thoughts.
Although several of his posts on Facebook contained messages seeking financial help to enable him to run his business, one post dated 8th October 2022, read;
”Suicide kinda answers all, it’s the only thing that listens and trusts You when You left all to your self “Good night and Good bye”.
As of the time of filing this report, all efforts made by Punch Metro to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the State, Funmilayo Odunlami, proved abortive as she did not respond to phone calls.
