Former England manager, Gareth Southgate, is being considered for a high-profile role following his departure from the Three Lions.
The BBC is looking for a notable figure to anchor their flagship program ‘Match of the Day,’ and Southgate has emerged as a top candidate.
Intriguingly, the BBC aims to stir up some drama with current host Gary Lineker, who was notably critical of the Three Lions during the Euros.
After England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Southgate stepped down, and now the BBC is keen to leverage his expertise and possibly ignite a rivalry with Lineker.
The BBC hopes that the two will “hammer out their differences” on live television.
As an insider commented, “Two of England’s greatest football heroes going head-to-head every week would be unmissable telly!”
However, the BBC faces competition from ITV, which is also eyeing Southgate as their current pundit, Gary Neville, returns to Sky.
Southgate is reportedly taking some time off, leaving his return to management uncertain.
Meanwhile, England is searching for a new manager, with contenders including Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter.
