The Kebbi State wing of the Women Rights Initiative has condemned the alarming increase of gender-based violence in the State.
According to Daily Post, the group in partnership with Technical Working Group, said that they could not handle the situation alone hence the engagement of traditional institutions and other relevant stakeholders.
The groups maintained that “the Governor signed two bills into law, including violence Against Individuals and the Child Rights Protection Law.”
According to the Executive Director of the Women’s Rights Initiative,Mrs. Laiatu Bamaiyi, she indicated that the groups were in the district to educate rural residents about GBV, including rape and other forms of domestic abuse.
“Already, there has been a law recently signed by the State Governor on the issue of GBV which was not only, about rape but includes other offences such as forced marriage, emotional trauma, physical abuse and many more,” she said.
Also, the Kebbi State Coordinator for the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse, and Labour, Malam Kabiru Musa, described rape as an act of inhumanity against a fellow human being, for which the perpetrator is sentenced to life in prison and publicly flogged on a market day.
According to him, the law would also prosecute parents, relatives, and guardians who covered the case or attempted to shield the criminal.
“People should not hide under the cover of ignorance to commit heinous crimes. The best way to tackle the menace in our society is to expose the culprits,” he stated
