Gunmen on Tuesday evening kidnapped Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 6 p.m. while the priest was on his way back from an assignment in Aliyi community.
The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, under which the cleric serves, confirmed the abduction in a statement issued by the chancellor and secretary, Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu.
“I am directed to inform you that one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped this evening. We request fervent prayers for his safety and swift return,” the statement read.
Fr. Azubuike, who was ordained on September 27, 2014, is well-known in the community, and the news of his abduction has caused significant concern among parishioners and residents.
The elected councillor of Obollo ward, David Ajaero expressed his distress over the incident. “We are praying for his unconditional release,” Ajaero said, adding, “He is a good man, and we urge everyone to join us in praying for his safety.”
The Imo State Police Command has initiated a full-scale investigation into the kidnapping. State police spokesperson Henry Okoye stated, “The Commissioner of Police has assembled a high-powered investigation team to ensure the priest’s rescue and to track down the suspects.” Okoye assured the public that the police are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
