In a tragic turn of events on Wednesday, Taraba State witnessed deadly assaults in two separate communities, leaving at least five individuals dead.
The Acting Police Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Gambo Kwache, confirmed the incident.
The first incident occurred in Mayo-Sabere, Mai-Idanu ward, Gashaka Local Government Council, where three lives were brutally taken.
Among the deceased were Mallam Adamu Yahya aged 70, Abdu Yahaya aged 52, and Nuhu Yahya aged 42.
In a separate attack in Rafin-Kada community, Wukari Local Government Council, two farmers fell victim to assailants.
The identities of these farmers remained unknown at the time of reporting.
The chairman of Wukari council, Ismaila Dauda, confirmed the grim details, attributing the attack on the farmers to Tiv militias.
The incidents have cast a shadow of mourning and concern over the affected communities, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
“It is true; two persons were killed while working in their farms by Tiv militias. I pray God Almighty will grant them eternal rest and comfort us all in Jesus’ name,” he stated.
The community leadership, in collaboration with security forces, urged residents to avoid actions that could provoke reprisal attacks.
They emphasized their ongoing efforts to apprehend the militias, working tirelessly to ensure safety and peace in the area.
“May I seize this opportunity to appeal to all the good people of Wukari not to take laws into their hands and allow the security agencies to investigate this issue and come up with their findings,” he pleased.
Sources from Gashaka council, who spoke with newsmen, stated that besides the three fatalities, several individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries.
They also attributed the attack in Gashaka to the rangers of the Gumti National Park.
Further addressing the incident, the police spokesperson disclosed, “It was confirmed that two persons were killed in Wukari and three in Gashaka.” She added, “The cases are still under investigation, and efforts are on top gear to apprehend the culprits.”
