Just 24 hours after the tragic killing of four policemen and a Point of Sale operator in Irete, Owerri West Local Government Area, a young man was shot dead in Orji, Owerri North LGA on Tuesday afternoon.
According to The PUNCH, the assailants, who fired shots into the air, made their way towards the Owerri-Enugu Road, setting ablaze an Imo State Government Waste Management Agency vehicle at the Nkwo Orji Market.
An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous due to restrictions on speaking to the media, reported that the gunmen shouted, “Stay in your homes.” He continued, “Don’t come out during the sit-at-home if you love your lives.”
The market was thrown into chaos as traders and shoppers fled, abandoning their goods and vehicles in their rush to escape.
Commuters faced significant disruption, with very few buses operating in the area due to fears of being targeted.
In response to the violence, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Henry Okoye assured, “The police operatives have been massively deployed at Orji. The situation is under control. The miscreants responsible for the attacks will certainly be brought to book.”
