Gunmen have killed a renowned lawyer on Wednesday evening in Otukpo, Benue State.
The attack occurred at his residence on Otukpa Street, plunging the community into mourning.
Reports indicated that Ofikwu was ambushed as he arrived home late in the evening.
A source close to the family, who requested anonymity, recounted the chilling details of the incident.
“Two armed men had laid an ambush for him. As he was waiting for his people to open the gate, the assailants emerged from hiding and shot him at a close range,” the source revealed.
Despite efforts to save him, Ofikwu succumbed to his injuries. Eyewitnesses say he was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, but medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival, leaving his family and friends devastated.
Reacting to the incident, the Benue State Police Command confirmed the murder and assured the public that efforts were underway to bring the culprits to justice.
Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Catherine Anene said, “This incident is confirmed, and investigations are ongoing. I commiserate with his family and friends and assure them that justice will be served.”
The killing of Ofikwu, a respected legal practitioner, has reignited concerns over security in Otukpo, a town already grappling with rising crime rates.
Community leaders and residents have called for enhanced security measures, urging the authorities to address the issue with urgency.
Ofikwu’s death is a significant loss not only to his family but also to the legal community in Benue State, where he was regarded for his dedication professionalism.
