A three-man armed gang have killed two people and injured two others in the early hours of Monday, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am in the parking area of Diamond Dumplings, situated in the Government Reserved Area of Abeokuta.
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the attack in an official statement released later on Monday.
According to Odutola, the assailants arrived in an unregistered black Toyota Hilux and confronted the occupants of a black Mercedes Benz GLE 350 with license plates bearing the prefix ‘DLA’.
Armed and aggressive, the suspects demanded the keys to the vehicle from its occupants.
“Three armed men in an unregistered black Toyota Hilux confronted the occupants of a black Mercedes Benz GLE 350 with a DLA licence plate, demanding the car keys,” Odutola stated.
When the victims refused to hand over the keys, the attackers opened fire. One individual, identified only as Ola, surname unknown. and Shobanke Oluwatimileyin, suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Two other occupants were also struck by bullets, sustaining injuries that required urgent medical intervention.
In response to distress calls, the Divisional Police Officer from the Ibara division quickly arrived on the scene, securing the area before arranging transportation for the wounded to a hospital.
Upon arrival at the medical facility, the attending doctor confirmed that Ola and Oluwatimileyin had succumbed to their injuries.
The two surviving victims were admitted to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi Aba, Abeokuta, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Odutola further disclosed that a preliminary investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly assault and to explore possible links to cult-related activities in the area.
“The public will be informed about the progress of the investigation in the coming days, as a follow-up to arrest the fleeing suspects,” she added.
As the investigation unfolds, residents in Abeokuta remain on edge, with police increasing their efforts to track down the assailants and prevent similar violent incidents.
