Gunmen, believed to be bandits, have tragically killed a woman named Shoni Michael in Plateau State.
According to The PUNCH, a local residents explained that her daughter, who was with her during the attack, was also shot by the assailants before they fled into the nearby bush.
The attack occurred in Kikyau village, located in the Mangu Local Government Area, on Wednesday evening.
The victims were reportedly preparing food in their home when the gunmen struck, killing Shoni Michael on the spot while her daughter sustained injuries.
The incident was confirmed by a resident of Kikyau village, Charity Jatau, who spoke to PUNCH from Jos, the state capital, on Thursday.
Jatau provided details of the tragic event, saying, “An aged woman was killed in Kikyau village last night after she was shot by armed men who we know to be terrorists. Her name is Shoni Michael. Her daughter sustained gunshot injuries.”
Jatau expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that it was particularly distressing as the victims were simply at home, preparing a meal for their family when the gunmen suddenly appeared and opened fire.
She added, “It’s very sad because the victims were at their residence while preparing food for the family at 4:30 pm when the terrorists suddenly appeared and opened fire on them.”
The residents of Kikyau village, who condemned the brutal attack, have called on security agencies to intensify their efforts in patrolling Kikyau and neighboring communities.
They expressed concern over the increasing frequency of such violent incidents and urged authorities to take swift action to curb the activities of these terrorists.
Efforts to reach the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable at the time of this report.
