Popular Hollywood actor, Tom Cruise, remains determined to take his next movie to outer space, reuniting with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman.
During the premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ part one in New York City, Cruise spoke to Variety, revealing that the production date is yet to be confirmed.
He stated, “We’ve been working on it diligently and we’ll see where we go.” The still-untitled film, backed by Universal Pictures, boasts a budget of around $200 million.
Notably absent from the update are NASA and Elon Musk’s Space X, with whom Cruise had discussions about filming aboard the International Space Station in 2020.
While it’s uncertain if Musk is still involved due to the ongoing Twitter and Meta’s Threads drama, he had previously expressed interest in the project.
However, before Cruise ventures into space, he still has ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ part two to film, potentially concluding his long-standing espionage franchise.
Writer-director, Christopher McQuarrie confirmed that work on the sequel will resume after the press tour for part one concludes.
During their return journey to the UK, McQuarrie plans to stop for location scouting. He mentioned having two days of vacation before diving back into work. The Mission: Impossible films are renowned for their stunt work, and Cruise delivers yet again in his latest outing.
From riding a motorcycle off a cliff to safely parachuting down and engaging in a train fight sequence, the practicality of the stunts adds to the excitement.
While Cruise’s space movie won’t be the first to be shot in outer space, as the Russian film ‘The Challenge’ achieved that feat, Cruise’s project is eagerly anticipated.
The Challenge is a Russian space drama about a doctor performing surgery on an injured cosmonaut. It was filmed in orbit for nearly two weeks and garnered success at the regional box office.
Cruise previously narrated the short documentary Space Station 3D, which was shot in space, making it one of several documentaries in that realm.
‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ part one is now playing in theaters worldwide. The film follows IMF agent, Ethan Hunt, on a globe-trotting mission to prevent the wrong hands from acquiring a bioweapon, while dark forces from his past close in.
Alongside Cruise, the movie features familiar allies such as Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson, and introduces new additions Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales as adversaries.
The release window for Cruise’s space-set movie is currently unknown.
