In a bid to maintain order, the Benue State Police Command has strategically deployed officers throughout Makurdi, the state capital.
According to The PUNCH, there’s a noticeable police presence across the state.
This heightened security measure appears to be in anticipation of the nationwide hunger protests scheduled to begin on August 1.
Governor Hyacinth Alia addressed the situation on Sunday, stating that he had received commitments from various groups, including student unions, market associations, organized labor, and other civil society organizations, to refrain from participating in the protests within the state.
Governor Alia emphasized that Benue has recently faced significant security challenges and another protest could potentially be exploited by disruptive elements. “I am thankful to the organized labor, student unions, market unions, and others for their decision not to join any protest that could ultimately be hijacked by hoodlums and disrupt our peace,” he said.
In response to public concerns about the increased police presence, state command spokesperson Catherine Anene assured residents that the officers are there to provide security and deter any potential troublemakers.
“The police presence across Makurdi today is intended to reassure citizens and send a clear message to any individuals planning to disturb the peace under the guise of protesting,” Anene stated.
