The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Commission, has revealed that it has recovered over N117bn between January and August, 2022.
According to The PUNCH, this was revealed by the Chairman of the commission, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, before the House of Representatives’ committees on anti-corruption and appropriation during the commission’s defence of the 2023 Budget Proposal in Abuja.
The Chairman provided a breakdown of the recoveries during his discussion of the 2022 budget performance, mentioning N1.413 billion, $225,965 in the ICPC/TSA recovery account, and N1.264 billion in cash from tax intervention.
Other recovered items include vacant lots, finished structures, vehicles, electronics, and jewelry, each worth a total of N679.13m, N2.603bn, N81.1m, N1.55m, and N195,500.
The ICPC boss went on to say that the Commission saved N49.9 billion through System Study and Review intervention, N6.435 billion in cash through budget tracking, N53.91 billion through ICPC advisory, and N614.2 million in other accounts.
Apart from the recoveries, the Chairman also highlighted other accomplishments of the Commission during the 2022 budget cycle to include but not limited to completion of 672 investigations as well as 565 non-petition-led investigations; securing of 15 convictions; 538 projects tracked under Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative, deployment of Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard on 260 MDAs;l, Review of Open Treasury Portal in 30 MDAs, System Study and Review of 10 MDAs, inauguration of 26 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units, 14 Corruption Monitoring activities undertaken; and public enlightenment and education of Nigerians on and against corruption through various platforms.
Also, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, Honorable Nicholas Shehu, spoke during the budget defense and praised the ICPC Chairman and his board members for their visionary and dynamic leadership, noting that their approach has completely changed the Commission’s fortunes and transformed it into a successful and vibrant anti-corruption organization.
Shehu urged the ICPC to keep pressing forward and reach new heights while pleading with the federal government to release the remaining funds from the Commission’s 2022 budget so that it can reach its goal.
