The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has disclosed that intelligence reports indicate the involvement of foreign mercenaries in an upcoming nationwide protest.
According to The PUNCH, Egbetokun in a press briefing on Friday advised Nigerians to exercise caution and reconsider participating in any protest groups.
He revealed that while some factions are advocating for peaceful demonstrations, others are pushing for violent actions, reminiscent of recent events in Kenya.
“We have been monitoring developments surrounding the protest threats. Some groups are calling for violent protests, while others promote peaceful demonstrations,” Egbetokun stated.
“However, we are concerned about individuals who advocate for peaceful protests but with violent undertones. This raises doubts about their true intentions.”
Egbetokun also commended those who have chosen to withdraw from the protest due to concerns about the potential for violence and the possible manipulation by enemies of the state.
He confirmed that credible intelligence supports these fears, highlighting the involvement of foreign mercenaries.
“The Nigerian police urge all citizens to exercise caution and think twice before joining any protest group,” he added.
