The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja over a violent incident that occurred during the Eid-el-Fitr Sallah celebration in Kano.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, reportedly led to the death of a vigilante member, Surajo Rabiu, and left another, Aminu Suleman, seriously injured. Both men were part of the local security detail attached to the Emir’s convoy.
According to a formal letter addressed to the monarch, the police are seeking his presence for an investigative meeting to aid the ongoing inquiry into the attack. The letter, signed by Commissioner of Police (Operations), CP Olajide Ibitoye, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, stated:
“I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID) to invite you for an investigative meeting with regards to an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain.
“In view of the above, you are hereby invited to Force Intelligence Department, opposite Police Force Headquarters, Area 11, Abuja by 1000hrs of Tuesday 8th of April, 2025. Your availability is highly sought for a purposeful investigation.”
The violent episode unfolded shortly after the Emir and his entourage departed the Kofar Mata Eid prayer ground, where he had participated in the traditional two-rakat Eid prayers. According to police reports, the entourage was attacked, prompting the local guards to act swiftly in shielding the monarch.
Police operatives in Kano have since confirmed the arrest of one suspect, identified as Usman Sagiru, in connection with the alleged killing. He is currently in custody and assisting the police with their investigation.
Kano State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the development in a statement made available to the press. He explained that the victims were attacked while providing protection for the Emir.
“The incident occurred while the local guards were providing a shield on the entourage of Emir Sanusi II on their way returning from the Kofar Mata Eid prayer ground after observing the two-rakat Eid-el-Fitr prayers,” SP Haruna stated.
Following the attack, the injured vigilante member, Aminu Suleman, was rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital in Kano for urgent medical treatment. His current condition is reportedly stable, although he remains under close observation.
Security around the Emir and other traditional leaders in the state has since been heightened as investigations continue. The Force Intelligence Department is expected to question Emir Sanusi II to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, the nature of the threats involved, and any potential security lapses.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Emir’s palace regarding the police invitation. However, sources close to the royal court said the Emir is likely to honour the summons in the interest of transparency and cooperation.
The incident has raised concerns in Kano and across the country about the safety of traditional rulers, particularly during public events that attract large crowds. The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice is served and maintaining law and order in the state.
More updates are expected after the investigative meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
