The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called on police officers to remain prepared, vigilant, and professional in anticipation of the protests scheduled for August 1 to 10.
The IGP emphasized the crucial role of police readiness in ensuring the nation’s safety and security.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the IG addressed senior officers during a virtual meeting, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law and maintaining the highest standards of integrity.
“The Inspector General of Police, on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, addressed a virtual conference with senior police officers from across the country, focusing on critical issues of preparedness, deployment, and the maintenance of law and order during the planned nationwide protest,” the statement read.
Egbetokun highlighted the need for continuous preparedness and strategic deployment to respond effectively to any situations that may arise.
He urged officers to remain alert and professional, underscoring the importance of their vigilance and readiness in maintaining national security.
The IGP also emphasized the significance of preventing the protests from turning violent. “The IGP emphasized that while peaceful demonstrations are a democratic right, the police must be vigilant to prevent any group from hijacking such events to incite violence,” Adejobi stated.
Proactive measures were directed to ensure protests remain peaceful and do not escalate into violent confrontations.
Furthermore, the IGP issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news during the protests, urging officers to manage this risk and advising the public to avoid disseminating unverified information on social media.
He also cautioned against unplanned protests and unnecessary street processions, which could disrupt public order and safety, reiterating the importance of confined protests to prevent the destruction of public infrastructure and property.
The IGP called on senior officers to remain steadfast in their commitment to service, emphasizing the critical role of their leadership in navigating the upcoming challenges.
