One of the train services involved in India’s biggest railway catastrophe in decades resumed service on Wednesday, as officials revised the death toll to 288.
According to railway spokesman, Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, “The Coromandel Express is back on track,” with a train leaving Shalimar station outside Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon for a 25-hour trip south to Chennai.
Numerous spectators watched as the full train pulled away from the station five minutes later than expected.
The service was one of three trains that crashed on Friday in the eastern state of Odisha, close to Balasore.
As usual, long, meandering lines formed for the unreserved section of the train.
A 30-year-old migrant worker in the queue, Samaresh Mondal, claimed that “four friends” who were on board the unfortunate train “went missing after the accident on Friday”.
“I’m prepared to face my fate. I have to work in Chennai to provide for my family and myself.”
Odisha’s top civil servant, Pradeep Jena, announced late on Tuesday that there were now 288 confirmed fatalities.
At least 1,175 individuals were hurt, many of them are currently receiving medical care in hospitals and are in severe condition.
83 bodies are still unidentified, according to Jena, who highlighted that the new death toll was calculated after deaths from both hospitals and mortuaries were added up.
