Inter Milan have been crowned Serie A champions for the 20th time after beating city rivals AC Milan 2-1 at San Siro.
Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram scored to give Inter the three points they required to be crowned champions, although they had to endure a nervous final 10 minutes after Fikayo Tomori pulled a goal back for the home team.
Simone Inzaghi’s team are now 17 points clear at the top of the Italian league with five matches to spare, leaving them uncatchable by AC, who sit in second.
Inter won the title with five games to spare, standing 17 points clear of their city rivals, who needed a win or draw to delay celebrations.
Tomori’s effort set up a tense finish in an ill-tempered clash, with red cards shown to Inter’s Denzel Dumfries and AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria during stoppage time.
Inter’s latest victory comes three years after their last Scudetto win in the 2020/21 campaign. This victory is particularly significant as it edges them ahead of AC Milan in the all-time tally of wins, with 20 to AC Milan’s 19.
Inter’s victory also earns them two stars above their club logo next season, with each star representing ten titles won. Juventus is the only other club besides Inter and AC Milan to have earned stars, boasting three for their 36 title wins.
This triumph also marks the fourth consecutive year that the Italian top flight has not been retained by a previous winner, with AC Milan and Napoli clinching the last two titles. However, Napoli has struggled this season, currently sitting eighth in the table after the departure of title-winning coach Luciano Spalletti.
The Nerazzurri have suffered just one defeat in the league all season, with Argentina forward Lautaro Martinez leading the line and topping the scoring charts. Martinez has netted 23 Serie A goals along the way.
Despite their domestic success, Inter was eliminated from the Champions League at the last-16 stage of 2024, after being beaten 3-2 on penalties by Atletico Madrid following a 2-2 aggregate draw.
