Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has named Yechiel Leiter, a former finance ministry chief of staff and longtime government official, as Israel’s upcoming ambassador to the United States.
According to the AFP, Netanyahu praised Leiter’s qualifications, and described him as “a highly capable diplomat with a deep understanding of American culture and politics.”
Leiter’s appointment follows the recent election of Donald Trump to a second U.S. presidential term, a victory welcomed by many in Israel due to Trump’s strong support for the country. Known for his extensive government experience, Leiter has held roles as deputy director general in Israel’s Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company.
Tragically, Leiter’s family was directly impacted by the ongoing regional conflict, as his son lost his life last year during Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Leiter himself resides in the Gush Etzion settlement in the West Bank, a territory central to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
His appointment was also met with approval from Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council, which represents Jewish settlements in the West Bank. “Yechiel has been a strong advocate for Judea and Samaria in the international arena,” Ganz stated, referencing the Israeli terminology for the West Bank region.
