Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has criticized the trade tariffs imposed by the United States President, Donald Trump, calling them a misguided approach that would not benefit America.
Although Meloni is perceived as an ally of Trump, she has expressed dissatisfaction with what appears to be a brewing trade conflict.
“We will do everything we can to work towards an agreement with the United States, with the goal of avoiding a trade war that would inevitably weaken the West in favor of other global players,” she stated in a Facebook post.
“In any case, as always, we will act in the interest of Italy and its economy, also engaging with other European partners,” she added.
The newly announced tariffs range between 10% and 49%, varying by country, as detailed in an official briefing distributed to reporters.
Trump explained that the tariff rates were determined based on the existing trade barriers and tariffs imposed by these nations on American goods.
Among the hardest-hit countries, Cambodia faces the steepest tariff at 49%, while Vietnam will see a 46% levy on its exports to the U.S.
The European Union is subject to a 20% tariff, while China will be hit with an additional 34% charge.
