Maduka Okoye has reflected on his long-awaited return to the Super Eagles, marking his first appearance for the Nigerian national team in two years.
The Udinese goalkeeper was between the posts during Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in the final Group D match of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, a game played under intense scrutiny as fans looked forward to seeing him in action once more.
Okoye’s previous appearance for the Super Eagles dates back to the 2021 AFCON, where he featured in the round of 16 clash against Tunisia—a match that ended in disappointment for Nigeria after a narrow loss.
Since then, the 24-year-old has been absent from the squad amid a combination of personal decisions and team dynamics.
Speaking about his return to the national team fold, Okoye expressed a mix of emotions but emphasized his pride at donning the Nigerian jersey again.
Despite the team’s loss to Rwanda, he revealed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country.
“Despite the result, I’m more than happy and grateful to have played in this jersey again! It has always been, it is and it will forever be an honour to represent Nigeria,” Okoye said.
Now firmly established as Udinese’s first-choice goalkeeper in Serie A, Okoye’s return is seen as a boost for Nigeria’s preparations ahead of the AFCON tournament.
Fans and analysts alike are hopeful that his experience and determination will add depth to the Super Eagles’ squad as they aim for success on the continental stage.
