Nigeria’s Falconets’ campaign at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup came to an abrupt end following a 1-2 defeat to Japan’s Nadeshiko on Friday, September 13, 2024.
The Falconets entered the Round of 16 with mixed fortunes—after a disappointing loss to Germany, they secured victories over the Korea Republic and Venezuela.
Their Japanese opponents, however, topped their group convincingly, with wins against Austria, Ghana, and New Zealand.
From the outset, it was evident that Chris Danjuma’s side faced a formidable challenge.
The first half was relatively uneventful, but Japan made their move in the 33rd minute. Miyu Matsunaga found the net with a well-placed shot after receiving a precise pass from Rihona Ujihara, giving Japan a slender lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw Japan asserted their dominance, and they extended their lead in the 65th minute. Maya Hijikata scored the second goal, further cementing Japan’s control over the match.
Despite the setback, the Falconets rallied in the dying moments of the game. In added time, Olushola Shobowale managed to pull one back, thanks to an assist from Goodness Osigwe.
However, Nigeria’s efforts came too late, and they were unable to secure an equalizer.
The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Japan, who advanced to the quarterfinals to face Spain.
As for Nigeria’s Falconets, their journey in the tournament concluded with this loss, marking an end to their 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup adventure.
