Brennan Johnson continued his impressive form, scoring his fifth goal in five games as Tottenham secured a 2-1 victory against Hungarian side Ferencvárosi TC in the Europa League.
The match, played in front of a passionate home crowd, showcased Spurs’ resilience, especially given the team’s significant changes from their recent 3-0 triumph over Manchester United.
Coming off the bench in the second half, Johnson injected vital energy into Spurs’ attack. His impactful presence was felt throughout, culminating in a stunning powerful shot that struck the crossbar before he slotted the ball home off the left post with just four minutes remaining, sealing the win for his side.
Despite a somewhat shaky start, Tottenham managed to take the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute, thanks to Pape Sarr.
The young midfielder capitalized on a scramble in the box, finding the net after a couple of ricochets.
Prior to that, Ferencvárosi had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside from Barnabas Varga, and Spurs’ goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was forced into a remarkable save to deny a powerful header.
The first half saw Pedro Porro come close, hitting the foot of the left post, while in the second half, 19-year-old Will Lankshear nearly doubled the lead with a volley that sailed just over the bar.
Timo Werner also squandered a chance, hitting the side-netting as he attempted to round the goalkeeper, illustrating Tottenham’s wastefulness in front of goal.
Johnson’s late intervention, however, showcased the quality he brings to the squad. With only minutes left in the match, he was in the right place at the right time, making the crucial difference that ultimately secured the victory.
Ferencvárosi continued to push for an equalizer, and they found success when Varga scored in the 90th minute with a well-placed finish from a low cross, but it proved too late to alter the outcome.
Post-match, manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team’s performance, especially considering the numerous changes made to the lineup. “We made quite a number of changes to the team, including bringing the young boys in but I thought they handled it really well. We defended well, played some good football, created some good chances, maybe could have had a couple more and most importantly won an away European tie which is a credit to the lads.”
He specifically highlighted the contribution of 17-year-old Mikey Moore, who delivered a standout performance, playing the full 90 minutes in a challenging European away tie. “He was outstanding. For a 17-year-old to play 90 minutes in a European away tie, he handled it superbly – I knew he would. It’ll help his growth. I didn’t feel like I needed to take him off; he still looked strong at the end and was still contributing.”
With this victory, Tottenham has now won five consecutive matches across all competitions for the first time since March 2021 under José Mourinho.
This match also marked just the second time in 11 attempts that an English club has secured an away victory against Ferencvárosi TC, with Leeds United being the only other team to achieve this feat in November 1969.
On a personal note, Pape Sarr has now contributed to a goal in each of his last three games for Tottenham, registering two goals and one assist after a lengthy drought of 17 matches without involvement.
Meanwhile, Brennan Johnson’s scoring streak has elevated his tally to five goals in his last five appearances, matching the total he managed in his previous 38 games for the club.
