The Kano State Government has provided scholarships to individuals with disabilities residing in the state for studying abroad.
The government has announced that individuals with disabilities will be eligible to benefit from the state government’s overseas scholarship scheme, provided they meet the necessary qualifications.
On Thursday, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, the State Commissioner for Education, made this disclosure.
According to the Commissioner, “It is part of the current administration’s policy to ensure fairness and equal access to education for every indigene of the state, in line with international conventions.”
“We will surely offer scholarships to those with First Class and Second Class Upper degrees, including those with disabilities, to encourage them to become productive citizens and live meaningful lives.”
Doguwa stated this in response to comments made by Mercy Corps and the Coalition of Disabled Self Advocacy Network Group, two non-governmental groups who paid him a visit in his office.
He said, “The government will also explore the possibility of establishing inclusive schools in parts of the state, even as the 5opportunity will also be explored to provide inclusive facilities in existing public schools.
“This is to make sure that people with disabilities are carried along in our development plans.”
He emphasised that, as part of its commitment to assisting PWDs, the state government recently sent 150 NECO examination registration forms to them, asking recipients to take advantage of the opportunity to improve their living conditions.
The Commissioner pledged that the state government will not desist in its efforts to collaborate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to promote people’s well-being, pushing development partners to integrate into the administration’s policies and plans to achieve long-term success.
